01

What is an empty leg flight?

An empty leg is a flight sector an aircraft must make without its original passengers. It may be repositioning to collect a charter client, returning to base after a one-way booking or moving to the next confirmed mission.

If the route and timing suit another client, the operator may offer that sector for sale. It is still a commercial air charter—not a ride-share or informal private arrangement—and must be performed by an appropriately licensed operator.

02

Why can the price be lower?

The aircraft has an existing operational reason to make the journey, so part of its positioning cost is already connected to another charter. The operator may therefore price the available sector differently from a dedicated flight arranged solely around a new client's requirements.

There is no dependable universal discount. Price depends on the specific aircraft, route, airports, schedule, positioning plan, demand and conditions attached to the offer. Compare the complete quotation rather than relying on an advertised percentage.

03

The central trade-off: value for flexibility

A normal charter begins with the client's preferred mission. An empty leg begins with an aircraft movement that already exists. The closer your journey matches that movement, the more practical the opportunity becomes.

04

Availability can change

An empty leg exists because of another aircraft movement. If that movement changes, the empty leg may move, be replaced or cease to exist. Exact consequences depend on the operator's written terms, so cancellation, refund and replacement arrangements should be understood before payment.

Do not build an immovable wedding, meeting, onward connection or major event arrival around an empty leg unless the contractual risk and a realistic alternative have been considered.

05

Airport and timing details matter

A sector advertised between two cities may use airports that do not fit your ground journey. Confirm the exact departure and arrival airports, local reporting time, operating hours, handling arrangements and any flexibility the operator will allow.

Adding a different airport, a substantial time change or an extra stop can require further repositioning and may turn the request into a conventional charter. Review airport choices in our private aviation airport guide.

06

Check the aircraft against the actual mission

A lower quotation is only useful if the aircraft suits the passengers and journey. Confirm the specific aircraft or an agreed substitution standard, passenger capacity, cabin arrangement, luggage volume, pet requirements, accessibility needs and any requested connectivity or catering.

The scheduled aircraft may be larger than you need, but that does not automatically mean every requirement is included. De-icing, special catering, ground transport, pets, additional handling and itinerary changes may be priced separately. Use the Louvani aircraft guide to understand the main selection factors.

07

Questions to ask before booking

  • What is the exact route, local departure window and aircraft?
  • Which licensed operator will perform the flight?
  • What happens if the underlying charter changes or cancels?
  • Is a refund, replacement aircraft or alternative charter provided?
  • Which taxes, handling and optional services are included?
  • How long is the quotation valid, and when is payment due?
  • What passenger, luggage, pet or accessibility limits apply?
08

Confirm who operates the flight

The UK Civil Aviation Authority explains that a paid air charter is commercial air transport and that the seller may be different from the aircraft operator. Passengers must be told the operator's identity and can check UK operators against the CAA's Air Operator Certificate records.

Read the CAA's charter and air-taxi passenger guidance. For flights performed outside the UK, the relevant national authority and operator approvals may differ.

How Louvani Jets approaches an empty leg enquiry

Louvani Jets acts as an independent intermediary between clients and licensed third-party aircraft operators. We do not own, operate or control aircraft, and we do not present an empty leg as guaranteed until the performing operator has confirmed it under the applicable booking terms.

Our role is to understand the route and acceptable flexibility, review suitable opportunities when available, identify practical limitations and compare a dedicated charter where it provides greater schedule control. The contracted air carrier retains responsibility for the aircraft, crew, safety decisions, flight planning and operational control.

Because empty-leg availability is short-lived and highly specific, a useful enquiry should include preferred airports, dates, passenger count, luggage and the earliest and latest acceptable departure times. If the journey cannot move, say so at the outset. That allows a conventional charter to be assessed from the beginning rather than after a time-sensitive option has disappeared. It also avoids treating an attractive headline price as more important than a workable, dependable itinerary.

Empty leg FAQ

Common questions about empty leg flights

Are empty leg flights always cheaper?

No. They can offer value when your route and timing closely match an existing repositioning sector, but there is no fixed discount. Compare the total quote, terms and practical fit with a dedicated charter.

Can I choose the departure time?

Usually only within the window permitted by the aircraft's underlying schedule. A large time change may not be possible or may require a separately priced charter.

Can an empty leg be cancelled?

It may change or disappear if the related aircraft programme changes. The operator's written booking terms should explain the consequences, including any refund or alternative arrangement.

Can I book a return journey?

An empty leg is normally a specific one-way sector. A return may need a separate empty leg or a conventional charter, and the two sectors can carry different terms and risks.

Does Louvani Jets operate empty leg flights?

No. Louvani Jets is an independent charter intermediary. Any flight is performed by a licensed third-party operator that retains operational control and responsibility.
